Your back pain might not be a back problem

Your back pain might not be a back problem

The 5-minute test that shows where your tightness is actually coming from.

The 5-minute test that shows where your tightness is actually coming from.

Mari Scaff

You've probably done a mobility assessment before. Most of them work the same way: watch a video, drag a slider to the frame that matches your range, get a score. Takes about 15 minutes. And it depends on you being good at judging your own range of motion, which most people aren't. If you've been tight for years, tight just feels normal.

So we built something different. We wanted a score you didn't have to report. One that came from measuring you, not from asking you.

What the test measures

pliability's Mobility Test uses a single movement: the overhead squat. NASM recommends it as one of the fastest ways to evaluate dynamic flexibility. When you squat with your arms overhead, everything has to work together. Ankles, knees, hips, spine, shoulders. If something is restricted, it shows up in the movement, usually somewhere unexpected.

A shoulder that won't go overhead might actually be an ankle problem. A back that rounds could be coming from tight hips. You'd never catch that testing each joint on its own. One overhead squat tells us how your body is functioning as a system.

How it works

Your phone camera tracks your joints in real time. It computes angles and watches for specific signals: knees collapsing inward, heels rising, too much forward lean. Those patterns tell us where your body is shifting load and which joints are compensating for others. We measure 17 potential dysfunctions from that data and produce your mobility score.

What happens after

When you go build a custom program after completing the test, you don't see a flat list of target areas. You see Recommended Areas based on your specific dysfunctions, with the body parts that need the most work surfaced first. That's where the score earns its value: not as a number to feel good or bad about, but as something that actually changes what you build and how you improve over time.

One member put it well:

"I'm an office worker and my back is terrible. I've been through about 10 apps looking for something to help. The mobility test really helped me figure out why my back aches. Turns out, it's my hips. Never would have thought that."

Your back hurting doesn't mean your back is the problem.

Take the test

Five minutes. You find out which joints are driving your tightness and which ones to address first. Then you build a program around what your body actually needs.

Take the Mobility Test and find out what your body's been trying to tell you.
